The council is trying to build more genuinely affordable housing to meet the demand of the thousands of households currently on the (Lambeth) housing waiting list. The objectives of this programme are to try and do this whilst working with local residents and enhancing the estate where possible. We will look at the needs of existing estate residents first and so if there are families which are overcrowded or requiring specialist accommodation then we will try to meet these in any new homes built. We are also working on policies which we hope will give the option to existing tenants on the estate to bid for a proportion of the newly built homes. This is at an early stage and will be subject to agreement from councillors as well as the resolution of other practical issues which we are discussing. We will keep residents informed with this and if we are able to introduce a local letting policy for the new units then we will advertise this on the website and around the estate. We will also be pursuing construction contracts which insist on a certain amount of local labour and which ensure that local apprentices are given work and training.
